Fragile, Aware, Unfinished, Here: Addiction, Bipolar, and Motherhood in the Same Body

About

Trigger Warning / Content Note
This book contains honest depictions of addiction, alcohol use, suicidal ideation, self-harm, childhood emotional abuse, and mental illness, as well as the impact these have on parenting and family life. Please care for yourself as you read.

There are stories where recovery looks like redemption, where motherhood arrives like a cure, where the past is something you walk away from and never look back.

This is not that kind of story.

In Fragile, Aware, Unfinished, Here, a woman who met alcohol at fifteen and motherhood at twenty asks what it really means to stay alive in a body and mind that rarely feel safe. Through intimate essays and poems, she traces a decade of “functioning” addiction and the slow, almost invisible ways bipolar disorder can dismantle a life from the inside.

From locked detox rooms to 1 a.m. bargaining sessions with a brain desperate for an exit, these pages follow the tension between wanting out and choosing to stay. There are letters to the girl she once was, love poems for the three children who keep her tethered to this world, and small records of the ordinary miracle of showing up when you would rather disappear.

This is not a tidy story of healing. It is a book about the softness that somehow survived what should have hardened it, and the decision to keep protecting that softness, hers and theirs, no matter how many times she has to begin again.
